Service Dog Training

Service dogs are specially task-trained dogs that aid in a disability specific to their handler. Many service dogs go on to give their handlers a new sense of independence, confidence, and safety! Service dogs at Prevail K9 are carefully selected and trained to meet the needs of their specific handler. Once a dog is ready to be delivered to their handler, a trainer will accompany the dog to their new home and handler. Over a few days, a trainer will be there to help the handler in the comfort of their own home learn how to work with and continue on the maintenance training of their dog. A trainer will also go with handlers to their place of work or school to help guide and integrate a service dog into their daily life.

Prevail K9 offers a different variety of options for people looking to get a service dog to aid with their disabilities.

  • Mobility Assistance
  • Autism (In both children and adults)
  • Psychiatric
  • Seizure
  • PTSD

Unlike many in the industry, our dogs are not pre-matched to a handler upon delivery. Also, our service dog puppy prospects are not given to puppy raisers but instead are raised by experienced trainers and handlers throughout the dog’s time in training at Prevail K9.

We currently do not have any dogs in training available to be matched.

However, we do offer evaluations to dogs for your personal dog to become your service dog!

Training Your Personal Dog To Become Your Service Dog

Dogs must be under the age of 2 years old to qualify for an evaluation and not have any behavioral problems such as reactivity or aggression.

The biggest training aspect of having a service dog is the dog’s ability to handle different environments in a well-behaved manner and be able to work for their handlers in distracting environments. Meaning ignoring distractions such as but not limited to people, other dogs/animals, food, sounds, motorized vehicles, and smells.

During your dog’s evaluation this will be the biggest thing that will be tested is how well your dog handles different distractions and environments. We know an untrained dog cannot be expected to handle these situations like a trained service dog would, but it’s imperative that a dog before becoming a part of our service dog training program has a good disposition to work for the future safety of their handler.

Once the evaluation is passed, we offer two different options to proceed with training your dog. There are continuous private lessons where you’ll be part of the process of learning how to train your specific dog from the ground up.

Or have your dog board with a trainer for a minimum of 6 weeks to begin basics and then will be given back to you to continue on the training with private lessons.
